SPECIAL PROGRAMS


 CORE PROGRAMS 

COURSES AND SEMINARS

Purpose: To provide educational opportunities for members of the legal management team.

Description: Sponsor and promote ALA teleseminars or other educational programs as appropriate each year. This would include cosponsoring a half-day seminar with the LPMS per year.

Accomplishments: Offered all ALA teleseminars through 2006, continuing into 2007, and various other courses and seminars.

MONTHLY MEETINGS

Purpose: To educate and provide networking opportunities to the members of the legal management team.

Description: Hold one section meeting (Human Resources, Financial Management, or Systems and Technology) each month. In addition, hold one general meeting per month which will focus on the topic which was not a section meeting for that month. In August and December, hold social events.

Accomplishments: Meetings have met both educational and networking goals.

MANAGING PARTNER DINNER

Purpose: To promote the Oregon Chapter and the legal management profession with attorneys.

Description: A biennial social hour and dinner followed by a speaker to which all Oregon Chapter members, law firms in Oregon and Southwest Washington, and Region 5 Team Members are invited.

Accomplishments: A successful annual program in effect since 1984.

MEMBERSHIP

Purpose: To develop and maintain the Oregon Chapter as a dynamic organization.

Description: Actively court prospective members through a variety of means, process membership applications, develop and hold regular new-member orientations, develop and maintain active volunteer lists, publish an annual membership directory, and provide current membership list as required.

Accomplishments: Have published annual membership directory and held biennial socials for several years.

NEWSLETTER

Purpose: To educate and inform members of the legal community.

Description: Publish and distribute the chapter newsletter bimonthly.

Accomplishments: The Oregon Chapter newsletter has won awards in ALA's chapter newsletter contest for many years.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

Purpose: To provide an administrative framework from which the Oregon Chapter can attain its goals.

Description: Nominate and hold elections for officers. Hold and record monthly Board meetings and annual Board Retreats. Update and follow the annual action plan. Handle the organization's finances, including receipts and disbursements, annual budget preparation, monthly financial reporting, tax reporting, and dues invoicing. Enlist willing members as section cochairs and committee chairs and members. Participate on the Regional Council and maintain communications with ALA. Maintain relationship with the OSB Law Practice Management Section. Provide the income necessary to fund the Oregon Chapter's goals.

Accomplishments: All of the above continues on an ongoing basis.

RESOURCE SERVICES

Purpose: To provide current useful market information regarding the legal community, including data regarding compensation and benefits of legal personnel in accordance with ALA antitrust guidelines.

     Update and provide library materials to members as requested.

     Maintain and make available to members and prospective members a Job Bank of openings and job seekers for positions eligible for Oregon Chapter membership.

     Produce a Resource Directory of Products and Services, including but not limited to users and vendors of law-related services.

     Create and maintain web site to facilitate communications, solicit new memberships, and partner with vendors.

Description: Produce a Salary Survey as follows: develop a questionnaire for use by an outside consultant who collects and tabulates confidential data on compensation and benefits of associates and legal support staff. Distribute questionnaire to Oregon and Southwest Washington law firms of three or more attorneys and Oregon Chapter members not otherwise included. Make survey results available for sale.

Accomplishments: Developed an improved Salary Survey in 1994 and have continued to produce quality Salary Surveys in subsequent years. Produced a Directory of Products and Services in 1995 and continuously since 1997. Continue to maintain a Job Bank. Approved design and expense of Web Site in March 2000.

VENDOR PARTNERING

Purpose: To provide revenue to fund core programs.

Description: An organized approach to solicit and raise funds to support all core programs. Based on an annual plan of projects, a fund-raising plan is developed to offer sponsorship and incentives to all vendors or specific vendors as determined appropriate. Other methods of fund-raising are reviewed as needed.

Accomplishments: Received good support from vendors contacted to support our newsletter, conferences, vendor fairs, and surveys.

WEB SITE

Purpose: To enhance communications among the Board, members, and vendors throughout Oregon and Southwestern Washington. To market to potential new members and provide information to anyone in the legal industry who wishes to learn about the association.

Description: Web site should include on-line membership registration, educational articles, list of Board members, opportunities for involvement in chapter committees, calendar of current and future events, job bank, membership benefits, link to Association of Legal Administrators, links to vendor products and services, Board minutes, membership directory, and a discussion forum. Web site maintained by chapter's Webmaster and the Cyber Chapter as part of its Chapter Outreach program.

Accomplishments: Web site was launched in the Fall, 2001. In the Fall, 2003, the former bulletin board was replaced with a discussion forum. Further enhancements are ongoing.

 SPECIAL PROGRAMS 

CLM STUDY GROUP

Purpose: To provide a forum for members to study to take the CLM exam. Also, to provide additional education to members who desire furthering their knowledge in specific areas.

Description: Maintain a Committee which will market the existence of the CLM Study Group and its availability to members. Develop a program which suits both the individual studying for the CLM Exam and those who are attending for the purposes of furthering their education.

Accomplishments: In 1999, the study group teleconferenced with the Puget Sound Chapter's program and received many ideas and guidelines on how to develop its own program. In 2002, the chapter held its first CLM Study Group; a study session was held once per week for three hours over a period of eleven weeks.

COMMUNITY CHALLENGE WEEKEND

Purpose: Increase awareness of the Oregon Chapter within the community.

Description: Develop a program which increases the exposure to the Oregon Chapter within its communities. Select and support special causes which have the potential to support the legal community.

Accomplishments: The Oregon Chapter held an ALA Community Challenge Weekend in October 2000, with Dress for Success as its main focus. Dress for Success is an organization which helps women of different backgrounds and varying situations enter or re-enter the work force. The organization also included the county programs Dress for Success did not support. The members showed good support of this program by donating clothing which Dress for Success could give to its clients.

VENDOR APPRECIATION/EDUCATION PROGRAM

Purpose: Enhance and further develop partnering with the legal community's vendors. Provide education to vendors on the best use of an administrator's time.

Description: Develop a program on an annual or biennial basis to meet the partnering needs of the Oregon Chapter and the legal community's vendors. Provide opportunities to top vendor sponsors to socialize with members without cost to them to show the Oregon Chapter's appreciation. Develop an educational program which teaches vendors the appropriate use of an administrator's time and marketing needs.

Accomplishments: The Oregon Chapter held its first Vendor Appreciation Night in March 2000. It was a successful showing of approximately 80 vendors and members. A second successful event was held in 2002 at Portland City Grill.

ALA TELESEMINARS

Purpose: To make ALA teleseminars available at an affordable cost.

Description: Advertise ALA teleseminars, including the hosting location, as far in advance as possible. Request pre-registration and announce both the minimum attendance and attendance fee required.

Accomplishments: The Oregon Chapter has been providing this benefit to its members since 1999, with varied attendance. Minimum attendance has been required since 2001. The Oregon Chapter sponsors sites both in Portland and outlying areas if sufficient attendance warrants.
